Miley Cyrus- See You Again and Again (2008)

Miley Cyrus- See You Again (excellent sound and video for some reason…)

I have talked about Miley before (and her brother??). She is good. What can I say. This one is one of my favorite songs and apparently there is a video, but in reality, I am surprised management isn’t trying to control it. Seems like everyone tries to do that. Good job to hotncleverchik who figured out how to post it. Here is See You Again wiki. OK, I am going to get into crazy stuff now. Writing credits goto: Destiny Hope Cyrus, Antonina Armato, Tim James. Armato and James also produced. Who is Destiny Hope Cyrus? Her other name is Miley Cyrus and not surprisingly, she is a pop lyrics writer too. Now, who are Armato and James??? Well, no other surprise, they are superstar producers and I think married? Antonina (wiki here), well she is a master super star. Bieber to Sick Puppies… You have got to read it. Co-founder of Rock Mafia. Who is the other co-founder????? Well it is… Tim James, the second producer. He is also a master super producer (wiki here). He did the awesome song called Perfect Day-Hoku. This is a whole another story. BTW Hoku is the daughter of Don Ho (wiki here). Watch great video here. Island girl as Elton would say. Overall, Miley can’t go wrong with all the great influences…

TGIF and the Awesome World of Covers

Katy Perry-Last Friday Night (2011)

Of course, this song is max-super power pop. Perry, McKee, Luke and Martin for writing and Luke and Martin for production. The usual suspects (wiki here). Another interesting thing about this song is it lead me to the world of covers that have been recorded. Here are two. Really great.

Last Friday Night-Olivia Mitchell (vocal doubling)
Last Friday Night-Drew Tabor

Two Awesome Pieces of Power Pop…

Moves Like Jagger- Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera (2011)

10 Years- Fix Me (2011)

Both songs above are genius. Cool neighbor introduced me Move like Jagger. Vevo pointed me to the 10 years band. Love them. Will work on production personnel.

Update 1: Move like Jagger was produced by Shellback and Benny Blanco. No surprise it is a hit. Both are quite the expert power pop producers and work with Luke, Martin, etc.

Update 2: Fix Me- Produced by aerospace engineer-turned-producer Howard Benson. Grammy nominated 2x. You have to see the list of bands he produced… (list here). He produced like 19 of my favorite modern alternative metal bands. Sick!

Kix it-Don’t close your eyes (1989)

Kix-Don’t close your eyes

yep, when you live in Maryland, you have to appreciate the Baltimore scene. Lots of good bands here. All Time Low, etc. But in the heavy metal days of the the 80′s., Kix was from Baltimore (wiki here). This was one of their genius pieces. Perfect arrangement and lyrics. Not surprising, the Kix album had a master production crew. Tom Werman, Duane Baron, John Purdell. They are some of the the masters of classic 80′s rock. Purdell and Baron did Ozzy’s No More Tears. This was power pop rock production extrodinare.

Great external links
Awesome Interview with Tom Werman. He did music for RockStar. Must read…

Super super Bass-Nicki Minaj (2011)

August 12th, 2011

Super Bass-Nicki Minaj (official video)

This one is genius, but there is a crazy story to it’s pop out! Apparently Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were required (click on names for great videos). Read wiki here. Despite that, Nicki was writer along with Daniel Johnson and Ester Dean. Ester is a super writer (wiki here). She is everywhere. It is the amazing rap/lyrics that make this song something. Nicki fits in alot of words into a verse and there is some very subtle but obvious (but not annoying) autotune. Very nice. Production was done by Kane Beatz. Ends up he is a young producer who’s real name is Daniel Johnson, who was co-writer of this song. Wiki is here. Verse is outstanding. Great resolve to a powerpop verse. Very great song.

Update: I have been obsessed with either the lyrics or emotion or production content in this song. I am going to call this a “masterpiece” mid-verse-resolve-to-a-super-cute-girl-that-makes-your-heart-melt transition. I heard it before, but I didn’t understand it as well as now. I am not sure who to credit. It may be Nicki or maybe it is an accident as it develops??? From what I have read, super pop songs are never an accident. But, in this case, I think they didn’t exactly know it was going be super pop???? I would love to find out the details. Here is the description of the powerpop event…

Verse 1: (pickup/tease interaction) …[Nicki starts the tease]…That’s the kid of dude I was lookin’ for (soft emotional insight resolve), and yes you’ll get slapped if you’re lookin’ hoe…back to unresolved pickup…
[Nicki back to the tease]
I said…excuse me, you’re a hell of a guy
I mean, my, my, my, my ,my you’re like a pelican fly
I mean, you’re so shy and I’m love’n your tie
You’re like slicker than the guy with the thing on his eye… [more cute girl tease stuff, heart-felt-intent sort of feel]

Verse 2: (pickup/tease)…[Nicki starts the tease up]
Excuse me, you’re a hell of a guy
you know I really got a thing for American guys
I mean, sigh, sickenin’ eyes I can tell that you’re in touch with your feminine side, (again, sung with wicked heart-melt-intent, as in verse 1)
..Yes I did, etc….

That vocal phrasing focus on the tease in the verse is genius lyrically, musically and arrangemently. Was that an accident? Hard to tell. Will try to understand on other songs.

OK Go-Here I go again again and Invincible (2005)

OK Go- Invincible

OK Go – Invincible from OK Go on Vimeo.

OK Go- Here It goes again

OK Go – Here It Goes Again from OK Go on Vimeo.

I feel bad about embeding “here it goes again”, but it was a genius video. I know it was viral. Demi Lovato reminded me of the of the OK Go songs and why I really loved them. Invincible is excellent. Lyrics are awesome (below). They talk about aliens, domination, unexpectation etc. Hugh P., the drummer of the Burning Sensation band that I get to play in, noted the awesomeness of OK Go before I even knew. Pete, the lead guitar genius, I think also knew they were great. I remember saying one night, wow, the drummer was actually right!! :) I saw them when DC101 hosted them at 9:30 club in DC one night… That is all I can say…

Invincible-OK Go (lyrics)

When they finally come to destroy the earth, they’ll have to go through you first.
I bet they won’t be expecting that one.
When they finally come to destroy the earth, they’ll have to deal with you first
and now my money says they won’t know about the
thousand Fahrenheit hot metal lights behind your eyes.
Invincible.
You’re invincible. (x2)
That crushing, crashing, atom-smashing, white-hot thing… It’s invincible.
When they finally come, what’ll you do to them? Gonna decimate them like you did to me?
Will you leave them stunned and stuttering?
When they finally come, how will you handle them? Will you devastate them deliberately?
‘Cause I’m gonna guess they won’t be prepared for thousand Fahrenheit hot metal lights behind your eyes.
Invincible. You’re invincible. (x2)
That crushing, crashing, atom-smashing, white-hot thing… It’s invincible.
(interlude) So, please use your powers for good. You’re invincible. (other stuff afterwards)

Demi Lovato- Here We Go Again again (2009)

Demi Lovato-Here we go again

Yes, I have talked about Demi before. Our 3 yr old was addicted to La La Land a few months ago… Her wiki is something. And it is worth following her on twitter. She is so not who you expect. To talk about this song, it is sort of Kelly Clarkson/Carrie Underwood-ish, but not exactly. Wiki for song is here. Looked up the production and song writing teams. I think it is SuperSpy on production, with SuperSpy with Lindy Robbins on lyrics. It is a genius song. Second verse of chorus is high which is unexpected, and there are weird production effects on her voice in the background. Maybe it is harmonics of her voice, but almost hidden. Very great song. Power sounds excellent for the band. Not exactly sure who they are… If you don’t know, Demi just released #skyscraper. Though I guess I agree her voice sounds good, the songs are not as good as la la land and here we go again. Of course, like everyone else, I am waiting for the really really good stuff from her. Demi does rule.

Barely Breathing-Duncan Sheik
Video is disabled, (video link is here) but this is a great recording of an awesome song. Apparently, Duncan is doing stuff with plays and other stuff… (wiki is here). But this song was so great. It was one of the major reasons I learned acoustic. Great tabs are here. Quick version here:

a G-chord comes in during interlude. Those are some of the greatest chords…
